The more you look at this vase, the more you see: the effect of the matte glaze over a red clay surface, which gives it a lunar feel; the lava glaze brushstrokes - random but not random - which create areas of interest and texture. Are the craters blue? Or are they white? Or maybe sand coloured? The more time you spend looking at "Waves on the surface of the moon", the more you will see.
Needless to say this vase is unique, even if I tried to make an identical one, I would never actually be able to make it look exactly the same.
"Waves on the surface of the moon" was built by hand, without a wheel, over the course of a few days. Once it survived the first firing at 960C, I glazed it first with my white matte glaze, then I applied a few random brush strokes of my lava glaze.
Another two days in the kiln, reaching 1240C, and the minerals in the glaze melted and fused with the clay to create this unique beauty.
The vase is functional and measures around 24cm in height and 12cm in diameter at its widest point.
All the glazes are formulated and made by me.
