When I tell you that I had been thinking about these bowl shapes for years, would you believe me? The word crater, funnily enough, comes from the Greek word for vessel, κρᾱτήρ (romanized: krātḗr). I imagine these bowls to decorate beautiful rustic tables in the country side, with olive trees all around. The irregular shape is inviting and soothing.
The organic shape is achieved, intentionally, by only forming the bowl by hand, without the help of any tool or wheel, starting from a ball of clay (around 700g in this case). It takes a lot of skill and time to pinch so much clay, so I hope you like the results.
"Rock in the sky" was built by hand, pinched from a ball of clay. Once it survived the first firing at 960C, I glazed it first with my white matte glaze on the inside and then my lava glaze on the outside.
Another two days in the kiln, reaching 1240C, and the minerals in the glaze melted and fused with the clay to create this unique beauty.
The bowl is functional and measures 11cm in diameter (it's irregular in shape) and ca 7cm in height.
Due to the nature of the glaze on the outside, this bowl should not be put in the dishwasher, oven or microwave.
All the glazes are formulated and made by me and tested for food safety in accordance with the law.
